Africans with disability are marginalized and isolated from society and often resort to begging as their sole means of survival.
People with disability account for an estimated 10% of the general population. However, they represent 20% of the poor.
80% of working age people with disability are unemployed.
The number of people living with disability is increasing. Factors that contribute to the growing number in Africa include:
Ageing population;
Injuries at home, work and on the roads; Environmental degradation
School enrollment for those living with disabilities is between 5 to 10 percent.
Only 1 percent of women with disability in developing countries are literate.
People with disability in Africa are among the poorest of the poor as a consequence of their exclusion from school, health care, work, and other societal benefits.
People with disability are plagued with Stigma and discrimination that facilitate their exclusion from full participation in society.
