2009 ACTIVITIES

2009 was a success for the Exodus Guild.  Inspite of the personal challenges of our staff and the world-wide economic hardship, we maintained a focus on our journey of "Mobility in Adversity".  Below are some of the highlights of our 2009.  We thank you for your continued support.  The work continues...

Project 411:

Bi-annual Newsletter

Our goal was to release 2 newsletters in 2009.  However, the financial climate of 2009 warranted that we streamline our expenses.  As such, in 2009, we published "IN THE NEWS" our online newsletter. http://theexodusguild.org/Newsletter.aspx

Below, are the titles of the featured articles:

  • Amputees in Liberia Find Hope in Football
  • Study: More cases of autism in U.S. kids than previously realized
  • Locked away: Kenya's Health Anguish
  • Mainstreaming Disability
  • Study: People with Disability are more likely to be victims of violent crime
Profile in Disability

Also in our newsletter, we featured the life of Mrs. Folajoke Adenodi in the article, "How Sweet: My Love Affair with Disability".

This article highlighted the personal relationship that the Exodus Executive Director has with disability.

It reads, In 2005, when the Exodus Guild was founded, I did not know why I was drawn to disability since I did not have a personal story to tell.  However, for some reason, God gave me Exodus to enlighten “the world” about a movement for Africans living with disability.

SCHOOL OPERATIONS "SCHOPE":
 KENYA LIBRARY PROJECT

The Machakos Library Project in partnership with Beyond the Vision Initiative continues to develop and progress in 2009.  We hope that in 2010 the building development will completed and the library ready for use.

Library in 2008 barely off the ground.

By the end of 2009, the library project has come far and is more than five feet off the ground (below ).

We still have a long way to go.  However, the progress is astounding.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

In 2009 we visited Chesire School in Ibadan Nigeria through the efforts of Mr. Lanre Awesu, the Exodus Nigerian representative .  There, we donated school supplies and entertained the students.

DIS-AIDS:
HIV/AIDS RALLY

This year, we expanded our HIV/AIDS Rally to Kenya.  With our partnership with Beyond the Vision Initiative, the 2009 Rally was bigger and better than last year's.  The focus of this Rally is inclusion.  We are excited that at least once a year, people with disability are included in the HIV/AIDS talk.

EXODUS CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP:
HOSPITAL VISITSIn 2009, we continued visiting people living with disability at the Eleanor slater Hospital in Warwick, RI.
SUPPORT NETWORK

In Kenya, through our partnership with Beyond the Vision Initiative, in 2009, we established a viable support network for the Women of Machakos.  African women and children have been historically and systemically removed from education and public health matters.  Yet, studies have shown that educating women and children is a preventative measure towards acquired disability.  In 2009, the support network exists in Machakos.
